Nicky’s Family
Czech Republic/Slovak Republic, 2011Nicky’s Family is an eye-opening and, ultimately, uplifting documentary about the positive effect just one man can have on future generations through selflessness and astonishing acts of true humanitarianism.
Known as ‘Britain’s Schindler’, Nicholas Winton saved hundreds of Czech and Slovak children from an advancing Nazi empire during World War II. In 1938, as a 29 year-old London stockbroker, he had the foresight to organise rail-sea transports for over 600 youngsters, sending them to host families in Great Britain before the war was officially declared. His pre-emptive actions, undoubtedly, saved the lives of many innocent souls.
Nicky’s Family features interviews with a 103-year-old Winton who is still alive today, as well as collecting the individual accounts of those he rescued, combined with archival footage and photographs. Winton’s incredible story only really came to light in recent years but the effects of which will resonate forever.
