Kadimah and JIFF present this unique, world-first retrospective at Classic Cinemas Elsternwick, showing all seven films based on Isaac Bashevis Singer’s stories. You will see displayed the fabulous storytelling talents of the only Nobel literature laureate to write in Yiddish. While the films are majority English language, the nuance and depth of the original Yiddish texts shine through.
In his Nobel Prize acceptance speech, Singer described Yiddish as “rich in humour, and in memories that mankind may never forget. In a figurative way, Yiddish is the wise and humble language of us all, the idiom of frightened and hopeful humanity.”
