Fever At Dawn (Hajnali Láz)

Fever At Dawn

“Gárdos has managed the impressive feat of finding a new way to talk about the Holocaust.” — The AV Club

In July 1945, Miklós, a Hungarian survivor of Belsen, arrives in a Swedish refugee camp. His doctor has just given him a death sentence; Miklós’s lungs have filled with fluid and in six months he will be gone. But Miklós has other plans. He didn't survive the war only to drown from within, and so he wages war against his fate. Acquiring the names of the 117 Hungarian women also recovering in Sweden, he writes a letter to each of them in his beautiful cursive hand. One of these women, he is sure, will become his wife.

Based on the true story of director Péter Gárdos’ parent’s courtship as documented in his bestselling novel of the same name, Fever at Dawn is a touching and lyrical account of an unlikely courtship. As letters slowly make their between the institutions where Lili and Miklós are confined, we come to understand the dreams of vulnerable young people whose lives had been brutally disrupted by the madness of war. Starring the ‘queen of Israeli cinema’, Gila Almagor.
