Sheitel – Beauty in the Hidden

Sheitel – Beauty in the Hidden

“confronts widespread misconceptions and stereotypes and also offers a rare look into the global wig industry” – Forward

Australian Premiere

From wigs to scarves to hats, this fascinating documentary explores the practice of hair covering among Jewish women, the intricacies of the wig industry, and the cultural, religious and personal significance of this long-observed practice within Orthodox and Hasidic communities.

One of the most visible and misunderstood traditions of Orthodox life, this film by Lynda Medjuck Suissa explores how sheitels and coverings serve not only as markers of faith, marriage and modesty for Jewish (but also Christian and Muslim) women, but as articulations of style, identity and empowerment.

A deep-dive into the roots of this tradition and interviews with 30 women, among them businesswomen, influencers, podcasters and a New York State Supreme Court Justice, encourage us to look beyond appearances and cultural differences and foster a deeper understanding of this unique form of self-expression.
