When fleeing their home city of Minsk to evade the Nazis, Jewish brothers Ilya and Sasha’s parents are tragically killed when their convoy is shot down by German fighter planes. The boys’ only possession is a family photo that they tear in half, each of them keeping a piece to remember their parents. After being imprisoned in a German hospital, the two boys become separated and older brother Ilya is taken in by a courageous peasant couple who risk their lives to hide him from the Nazis, giving him a new name and identity.
Despite the unfathomable challenges Ilya faces, he never gives up hope of being reunited with his brother. Decades later, he receives a phone call that changes his life. This is a heartbreaking but hopeful story of survival, humanity and the indestructible bond of family, based on the real-life experiences of two brothers.
